Working at home entails as much career planning as being involved in a corporate set-up. As in most jobs, you need to discover your full potentials as a professional once you decide to work at home. You can’t simply wake up one day and say that you want to give up an office job for an online or homebased one. Below are things you need to consider before joining the bandwagon of homebased professionals.

What’s in the market, and does it suit your skills?

Internet marketing has gone beyond the realm of simply keeping a website and hosting a banner that advertises an offline product or service. We’re no longer talking about cyberspace billboard businesses here. Careers online have grown by a significantly wider scope than that.

Among the most popular career choices online are article writing jobs, website developing, SEO expertise, web designing, telemarketing, and online tutorials. If you can churn about 3000 words’ worth of decent and informative articles in 8 hours or less, you probably have a future in article marketing.

Education graduates or college students looking for part time jobs can look into the possibilities of online tutorials. Most of these jobs require you to have good telecommunicating and teaching skills. These careers also require you to be well-versed in software programs like Skype which allow you to make calls online.

If you’re a web developer, it’s probably safer to be affiliated with a bigger company to make sure that your clients are real and that they pay. Most professionals, when they’ve proven themselves to be valuable enough for the company, manage to compromise with their employers regarding work schedules.

Some working parents, mothers especially, are given opportunities to work part of at the time at home so they can take care of the kids at the same time. If you’re in such a situation, you can probably propose this to your boss, saying that the company can save up on office maintenance costing this way.

Do you have the space and equipment for a homebased job?

Although you’re working at home, you can’t simply depend on a laptop and a spot in the living room unless you’re living alone. As much as you love your family, they can always get in the way of you and your homebased work unless you set up a private space for you to work in.

Consider how much space you have at home. Is there a spare room you can use as an office? You need to make sure that that office is far away from distractions like noisy radios and television sets.

As much as possible, you should keep a separate phone line for your business. Avoid taking personal calls when you’re at work, and make your family understand that you need to be left alone during “office hours”. The plain truth is, working at home is just as challenging as working in a real corporate office.

Do your homework

Before agreeing to sell any item or service to a client or company online, do your research first. The internet is a highly temporary space. Websites and email addresses can appear and reappear without any warning. As an online freelancer, you should always verify the identities and credentials of the people you’re dealing with.
